3 days in Roslagen with the children

Day 1 — Norrtälje and the surrounding area

Start in Norrtälje, Roslagen's natural hub. The town is reached in just over an hour from Stockholm by bus 676 from Tekniska högskolan, or by car via E18 and road 76. Spend the morning in the lush canal areas along Norrtäljeån and let the children run around in the town centre.

In the afternoon, Norrtälje football golf is a sure bet for the whole family — an easy-going activity that works for most ages. End the day with a swim; Roslagen has plenty of family-friendly bathing spots with shallow water and sandy beaches along the coast.

Day 2 — Out to the archipelago

Day two takes you towards the sea. A popular family destination is Siaröfortet on Kyrkogårdsön — an old defensive fort where children can explore tunnels and gun placements in a dramatic archipelago setting. Alternatively, you can head to Batteri Arholma, an experience museum in a decommissioned coastal artillery battery at the far end of the northern archipelago.

For those who prefer a quieter island day, Lidö is a good choice — an island with swimming, nature and space to spread out your picnic blanket. Archipelago boats depart from several jetties along the coast during the summer season.

Day 3 — Animals, ice cream and heading home

Save something cosy for the last day. At Väddö Gårdsmejeri children can meet the cows and taste homemade ice cream — a KRAV-certified organic farm dairy that is a popular excursion destination. In summer, cow safaris are offered.

By Lake Erken lies Vikingabyn Storholmen, an open-air museum where children can try Viking crafts and archery. Finish with one last swim before heading home — or save a bathing spot for your next visit.

Roslagen's strength is the short distances: archipelago, farms and bathing spots are close to each other, which makes it easy to adapt the days to how the children are feeling. Pack rain clothes and swimming clothes — the weather changes quickly by the coast.
