Active Long Weekend — Kayaking and Hiking in Roslagen

For those who want to get active, Roslagen offers both sheltered paddling waters and miles of hiking trails. Here is a suggestion for three active days that combine coast, forest and archipelago — adjust the stages according to your fitness level and ambition.

Day 1 — Hiking on Roslagsleden

Roslagsleden stretches almost 190 kilometres from Danderyd Church in the south to Grisslehamn in the north, divided into eleven stages. This makes the trail easy to pace: choose a day's hike according to your fitness level and logistics. The stages vary between gently rolling forest terrain, open pastureland and coastal sections.

The trail is well marked and several stages begin and end near public transport, making it simple to hike without your own car. Pack water, packed lunch and good shoes — the service offerings along the trail vary.

Day 2 — Paddling in the archipelago

On the second day, you swap your feet for paddle blades. Paddling in Roslagen's archipelago offers sheltered sounds and bays suitable for both beginners and experienced paddlers. At Furusund you can rent kayaks and get guidance, and from there you can reach a string of islands.

For those in the northern part, Gräsö Canoe Central offers rental in the Öregrund archipelago. Plan your route according to wind and weather — conditions at the coast can change quickly.

Day 3 — Nature reserves and tranquility

End with a more relaxed nature day. Florarna is one of Uppland's largest contiguous bog and forest areas, with boardwalks and trails through pristine wilderness. Alternatively, head to Arholma-Idö nature reserve at the far end of the northern archipelago, where sea meets old-growth forest.

Safety and planning

Always check the weather forecast and water temperature before paddling, and wear a life jacket. For hiking, the right of public access applies — show consideration for the land, wildlife and other visitors. Many trails and reserves lack services, so plan your provisions and water in advance.
