Albert Engström — Artist and Humorist

Albert Engström (1869–1940) was a draughtsman, painter and author whose depictions of Swedish folk characters and Roslagen's fishing population became part of the national cultural heritage. In 1897, he founded the humour magazine Strix, which he ran for decades, and his drawings of fishermen and rural figures defined an entire era of Swedish satire and folk culture.

Engström was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1919 and appointed to chair no. 18 of the Swedish Academy in 1922. He received an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University in 1927 and served as acting professor at the School of Arts, Crafts and Design from 1925–1935.

The Move to Grisslehamn

In 1902, Engström purchased the farm Augustberg in Grisslehamn. The small harbour on the Åland Sea — historically one of the most important crossing points to Finland and Åland — became the artist's home for the rest of his life. Here he captured the fishermen's dialect, humour and daily life along the coast in drawings and prose texts that preserved a bygone era.

Along a winding path down to the sea, Engström had a studio built with a whitewashed façade facing the sea — intentionally designed to serve as a sea mark for passing vessels.

The Museum Today

The Albert Engström Society — founded in 1981, with around 800 members one of Sweden's largest literary societies dedicated to a single person — runs the museum at Augustberg. Visitors can see the rooms restored to how they looked during Engström's time, with artworks, personal objects and memories from his many travels. The studio is shown by guided tours.

The museum consists of the Engström House (main building), the Studio, the Draughtsman's House and Café Kalaset.
