Angarnssjöängen — Stockholm Region's Finest Bird Lake

A lake worth pilgrimage to

Angarnssjöängen nature reserve is located in Vallentuna municipality, just over three kilometers northeast of Vallentuna station. The reserve protects a 565 hectare landscape of lake, wetland and agricultural land and has been formally protected since 1982. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network under the designation SE110034 (Angarn).

Bird life

Angarnssjöängen is counted among Stockholm County's finest birdwatching spots. Just over 250 bird species have been recorded in and around the reserve. Spring and autumn, when nesting birds arrive and migratory birds make stopovers, are the most productive periods for birdwatchers. Among species noted are whooper swans, greylag geese, cranes, various waders and diving ducks. Midsommarberget provides a broad overview of the lake, and further east stands a bird tower that offers an even better vantage point.

Sjöängsslingan and facilities

The reserve's marked hiking trail, Sjöängsslingan, runs around the lake in an almost seven kilometer loop and passes the bird tower, barbecue areas with wind shelters and information boards. Byksberget has a viewpoint with a ramp adapted for wheelchair users. Adjacent to the car park at Örsta are toilets and clear information boards.

How to get here

By public transport: take Roslagsbanan to Vallentuna station and then bus towards Kårsta; get off at the Örsta stop, approximately 200 meters from the reserve entrance. By car: follow E18 towards Norrtälje, turn off towards Åkersberga and then follow signs to Angarnssjöängens nature reserve.
