Ångbåten SS Norrtelje

s/s Norrtelje was named after the town of Norrtälje, which in the early 1900s was her home port. As early as the late 1800s, the engineers H.A. Bertheau and Ernst Hernberg began developing the idea and construction of the vessel, which was given the name "Queen of the Archipelago Fleet". The vessel was built in 1900 at William Lindberg's Verkstads- och Varfvs AB, Södra Varfvet in Stockholm, for 225,000 kronor. The engineer H.A. Bertheau gave the idea for the vessel's construction and the engineer Ernst Hernberg made the drawings. The first time s/s Norrtelje moored at her home port of Norrtälje was on 12 June 1900. She was first put on the Stockholm–Furusund–Norrtälje route. In the summer of 1950, the vessel ran for the last time in traffic between Stockholm and the northern archipelago. After that she moved to other routes, including as an Åland boat with daily trips between Norrtälje and Mariehamn. In the 1960s the vessel was saved from scrapping through a rescue operation that later became a foundation that today owns and manages the boat. A friends' association to support the vessel was formed in 1998. Today she lies still and is not used in traffic, but functions as a museum and a reminder of the role of the steam-powered archipelago boats in the early 1900s.
