Ånö nature reserve

The nature reserve consists of old coniferous forest with pine and spruce trees up to 170 years old. Several spruces have spreading branches and some pines have thick bark. The area alternates between sparse lichen-rich pine forest on thin soil and herb-rich spruce forest hollows with scattered common deciduous trees, including large aspen. The hollows feature typical lime-loving coniferous forest with large carpets of hook-moss and rich herbaceous plants. The area also contains some swamp forest sections and small open wetlands. The forest is open and sparse due to historical land use, when the area was managed through forest grazing, selective felling and removal of windblown trees. The area has a very rich and lime-favoured flora of fungi and vascular plants, including examples such as hedgehog fungus, violet webcap, brown roll-rim and comfrey. There are also lichen species worthy of protection, such as annular lichen. The reserve has an easily accessible small car park from which a marked path runs through the forest and back.
