Äpplarö

You come to Äpplarö for a day trip or to stay in a furnished tent with beds, or alternatively in the sea cottage. The island is unique with its bathing bays and rock bathing. There are fine walking paths, pastures, wetlands, rocky ground, coniferous forest and deciduous forest with, among others, aspen, oak, alder, hazel and lime. In the middle of the island lies Äpplarö Farm, run by the Johansson family, who also have a farm shop. In the pastures around the farm graze the family's Klövsjö sheep, and around the stable peck Hedemora hens. There are about 35 houses on the island. The first known islander was Jöns of Äpplarnö, who in 1538 paid 10 öre in tax. In 1646 Lennart Torstenson bought the tax rights to, among others, Äpplarö and thereby became the archipelago's largest landowner. In 1778-79 smallpox struck hard against the island's population. The explorer Sven Hedin, who spent several summers here in the 1880s, drew Stockholmers here. As early as the start of the 1900s, tourism was the island's most important industry. Although there were only a few year-round residents, the island had one of Waxholmsbolaget's more significant jetties. During the steamboat era the large-scale Äpplaröbaden project was begun in the early 1900s. Äpplarö Guesthouse opened in 1905 and was extended in 1914. In 1917 the facility was bought by the businessman Johan Petter Åhlén, who had the so-called Maritz farm built, which is still in the family's ownership. Åhlén & Holm's holiday home, Äpplaröbaden and Äpplarö hotel succeeded one another until 1961, when the hotel business ceased. From Strömkajen in Stockholm, Waxholmsbolaget's boats run to Äpplarö all year round. You can also travel by boat from Åsättra on Ljusterö. Raise the semaphore at Äpplarö jetty if you want to travel with the boat. There are railings along the jetty and a bench where you can sit while you wait for the boat.
