At the edge of the archipelago

Arholma lies just over 25 kilometres northeast of Norrtälje and is the last inhabited island in the Roslagen archipelago before the Sea of Åland opens up. The island's location in the outer archipelago gives it a special character: the vegetation is understated and wind-swept, the rocks bare and the sea expanses wide. It is a place of contemplation and grandeur at the same time.

Arholma-Idö nature reserve

Arholma is part of the Arholma-Idö nature reserve, which has been protected since 1965 and covers just over 1,800 hectares, of which 538 hectares are land. The reserve is characterised by shore meadows, pastures, deciduous groves and barren rocky environments. The bird life is rich — the islands are a breeding place for a number of seabird species and birds of prey. On Idö there are deciduous groves that are among the county's larger and that host a rich fungal and insect life.

History and maritime marks

Arholma bears traces of long human presence. Arholma Beacon, erected in 1768, is one of Roslagen's most recognisable sea marks and points out the entrance from the Sea of Åland. During the Russian attacks of 1719, the enemy fleet began its ravages along the Uppland coast right at Arholma. From the Cold War, Battery Arholma remains — an underground defence facility that today functions as a museum with guided tours.

Church and community

The white wooden church on Arholma has an unusual history. It was originally built as a mission church on Kungsholmen in Stockholm and was moved to the island during the 1920s. The church is a fixed point in the island community's life and a well-known landmark for visitors and boaters.

Getting here

Arholma is reached by boat from Simpnäs jetty, from where it takes about 15 minutes to travel to the island. Waxholmsbolaget serves the route in spring and summer. There are connections all year round, but in winter the ice situation can affect traffic. The island has a guest harbour, campsite and basic services during the summer season.
