Banvallarna — cycle along old railway tracks in Norrtälje
Norrtälje's closed railway lines have been transformed into green trails for cycling, walking and horseback riding. The developed sections Norrtälje–Rimbo and Rimbo–Rånäs follow the old railway embankments' flat and forest-rich routes.
Railways that became trails
During the first half of the 20th century, Norrtälje had a railway network that connected the coastal town with the inland. When train traffic was discontinued, the railway embankments were left behind as straight strips of land through forests and agricultural landscapes. Norrtälje Municipality took care of the central sections and prepared them for outdoor recreation.
The sections
The two prepared railway embankment sections are:
- Norrtälje–Rimbo — a relatively long section that connects the coastal town with the inland agricultural area around Rimbo.
- Rimbo–Rånäs — a continuation northward toward the mill and manor house landscape at Rånäs.
Additional unsanctioned sections continue from Rånäs northward to the municipal border and from Rimbo via Edsbro and Skebobruk toward Hallstavik. These are partially in usable condition but are not maintained by the municipality.
Activities
Cycling, hiking and horse riding are all permitted and welcome on the railway embankments. The flat terrain — the railways were constructed with minimal gradient — makes the trails easy to cycle and accessible for the whole family. The embankments are well suited for day trips or as part of a longer cycling tour in the Norrtälje area inland.
Practical information
The prepared sections are maintained and inspected by Norrtälje Municipality. The trails run on both municipal and privately owned land. Contact Norrtälje Municipality via norrtalje.se for current map information and any updates about trail status.
