Barnens ö

Barnens Ö is part of Väddö, located about 40 km north of Norrtälje in the Stockholm archipelago. For over a hundred years, children and young people have come to Barnens Ö to attend summer camp, which has created a unique place with a strong history. All the camp grounds and cabins are beautifully located close to the sea. There are cabins and camp grounds in fantastic settings that also welcome school trips, conferences, events and private parties. Barnens Ö consists of 650 hectares of land and about 33 km of shoreline on Granö, Lingslätö and Salnö in Roslagen's and Stockholm's northern archipelago. There are over 20 camp grounds and cabins and a total of 400 houses with over 1200 beds as well as conference facilities. Barnens ö is owned and managed by the Barnens dag Foundation. In 1905 the first house for summer camp was built on Barnens Ö! The Barnens Dag Association in Stockholm became an umbrella organisation for all the summer-holiday associations. Every year, Barnens Dag launched extensive activities and carnivals with several thousand children in costume who collected money. Large sums were raised, and the Swedish people stood behind the investments in children, and all the well-known people of the time took part in the demonstrations. The summer-camp activity was part of building the Swedish welfare society. Until the late 1960s the activity grew continuously. Cabins and grounds were built to drawings by well-known architects. Today there are over 400 houses on Barnens Ö and no house is like another. During the 1980s, course and conference activities were built up. The Barnens Dag Foundation was formed in 1980 and then took over the Barnens Dag Association's properties on Barnens Ö. The purpose is to promote activities for children and young people and to own and manage the properties. Parts of Barnens ö are also in a nature reserve managed by the County Administrative Board. This also includes Stor-Asken, Lill-Asken and Harholmen. The nature reserve offers a mosaic of mixed forest, coniferous forest and deciduous forest with old oak, maple, lime, birch and also black alder. In some places there are incredible views over water wherever you turn. The soil is calcareous, which means that many interesting plants and fungi thrive, for example coralroot, copper spike fungus and violet coral fungus. The ground in large parts of the reserve's deciduous forest is dominated by lily of the valley with elements of cowslip as well as the orchid Adam and Eve.
