Biskopstuna

Biskopstuna is a medieval castle ruin in Österåker. The castle was built as early as the late 13th century by the Archbishop of Uppsala, who at the time owned the Tuna estate.

The oldest part of the castle is a square keep, which has been extended with two barrel-vaulted rooms. Somewhat later, a narrow house was added along the southern side, probably in two storeys. During the Reformation, Gustav Vasa took the Tuna estate from the archbishop and the castle lost its role.

In 2022, Österåker municipality engaged the visual artist Elisabeth Ohlson, who was commissioned to visualise the place and create an exhibition in the castle. The exhibition contains photographs of archaeological objects from earlier excavations. Guided tours are possible.
