Björkby-Kyrkviken nature reserve

Nature and cultural landscape at Vallentunasjön

Björkby-Kyrkviken nature reserve is located by the northern part of Vallentunasjön, close to Vallentuna centre. The reserve is 100 hectares in size, of which 63 hectares are land, and is jointly owned by Vallentuna municipality and the Church of Sweden.

The nature is characterized by an open agricultural landscape around the reed-rich Kyrkviken. On moraine ridges there are pastures with dry slope flora, and the area is home to rich bird fauna. In spring, migratory birds gather on the arable land, and in the reeds of Kyrkviken species such as pintail, slavonian grebe, bittern and reed warbler breed.

The area also contains Vallentuna church and the bath house at the mill, as well as several ancient monuments – including two burial grounds from the Iron Age. The purpose of the reserve is to preserve both the valued recreation area and the attractive cultural landscape with long and continuous management.
