In Simpnäs lies the sailors' own museum. Here the heyday of sailing shipping on Björkö in the 1800s is on display. The maritime museum also arranges themed evenings.
Björkö-Arholma Maritime Museum in Simpnäs
The Björkö-Arholma Seafarers' Association was founded in 1891 and has deep roots in the region's maritime history. When the age of sailing ships came to an end in the early 1900s, the association increasingly turned to cultural activities with a focus on local heritage. In 1939, the publication Det seglade en Björkö-brigg was issued, featuring fragments from the maritime industry's heyday in the area.
The museum opened in 1951 in Marum but was moved to its present location in Simpnäs, where it reopened in 1980. The collections consist mainly of objects from the golden age of sailing ships in Björkö-Arholma.
In summer 2026, the museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 27 June to 16 August, 12–15. Visits at other times can be arranged by appointment.
