Blue Trail — Österåker
A 35 kilometre hiking trail from Vaxholm harbour to Domarudden in Österåker — through varied cultural landscape and noble deciduous forest on Bogesundsland.
From Vaxholm to Domarudden
Blå Leden is one of Roslagen's most visited hiking trails and runs 35 kilometres from south to north in southern Roslagen. The trail starts at the harbour in Vaxholm and ends at Domarudden in Österåker municipality, with passage through the Bogesundslandet nature reserve forming the heart of the trail.
Varied cultural landscape
Along the trail, the terrain varies between open cultivated land, noble deciduous forest and cliff views over the archipelago. Bogesundslandet is one of the Stockholm region's best-preserved cultural landscapes and is protected as a nature reserve. Within the reserve, special rules apply: dogs must be kept on a lead, and mountain biking is only permitted on designated sections.
Stages and connecting trails
Blå Leden is marked with blue markings along the entire route, with the exception of a section around Rydbo which runs over private land and is not maintained by the municipality — check the ground conditions before you plan that stage. Via a 9 kilometre connecting trail at Löttinge in Täby, Blå Leden connects with Roslagsleden for those wishing to continue northwards.
Public transport and parking
The trail is reached by bus 670 or 671 from Stockholm to Vaxholm, from where you start at the harbour. Parking is available at Vaxholm harbour. Maps can be found in the Österåker map (select Layers > Experience and do > Hiking trails) and in the Naturkartan app.
Difficulty and length
Blå Leden is 35 kilometres long and is classified as a moderately demanding day hike or two-day trip. The trail is suitable for experienced hikers and families with older children. It is possible to break it up into shorter stages thanks to bus stops along the route.
