Why Roslagen is perfect for dogs

Roslagen offers exactly what a dog could wish for: endless opportunities to move freely in nature. The forests, beaches and open plains north of Stockholm provide long walks far from the hustle and bustle of the big city. In summer it is green and lively, in autumn and winter silence falls heavily over the archipelago landscape – and dogs thrive equally well in all seasons.

Cottages and dog-friendly accommodation

When choosing accommodation there are several options. Cottages and farm stays are often the most convenient choice with a dog – private entrances, close to nature and the opportunity to let your dog out without disturbing neighbours. Furusund Värdshus and Marholmen are examples of facilities in Roslagen that explicitly welcome dogs. Marholmen also has a dog beach, an agility course and its own hiking trails – a paradise for dog owners. Always check the booking terms in advance, as a dog fee is often added per night.

Allemansrätten and dogs

Allemansrätten gives you and your dog the right to move freely in nature, but with responsibility. In nature reserves, dogs must be kept on a leash – especially during the nesting season April–July to protect ground-nesting birds. Read signs and reserve regulations on site. Outside reserves, your dog must be under such supervision that it does not disturb wildlife or other visitors.

Good walking areas

Vikingaleden and Roslagsleden are popular trails for dog owners and run through varied nature from inland forests to coastal cliffs. Along the coast there are many secluded bays and headlands that are excellent for beach dogs – remember to check if there are seasonal restrictions for dogs at municipal bathing areas.
