Already in the time of Per Brahe the Younger, there seems to have been a place of worship in the castle. In the sources, the great hall on the fourth floor is sometimes called the church hall, because it was there that the count married his second wife in 1653.
The current chapel, however, is of a later date and was added between 1863-68, when a major rebuilding transformed the castle into a romantic knight's castle.
It was the then owner of the castle, Nils Albrekt von Lantingshausen von Höpken, who engaged the architect Thor Medelplan and had the towers and the chapel erected. From the chapel's eastern façade there is the entrance to the von Lantinghausen von Höpken family's burial chamber, which is cut into the rock beneath the chapel's chancel. The chapel's altar, altar rail, pulpit and pew furnishings are original.
