Brottby

The Steward's Farm

The place takes its name from Brottby Farm. The name is first documented in the 1400s, as Brytioby — a combination of Old Swedish bryti, "steward", and by, roughly "farm".

Brottby is located in Össeby-Garns parish. On the west side of E18 lie the residential areas Karby and Sunnersta, on the east side Sundby.

Two churches from the same century

In Brottby there are both Össeby Church Ruins and Össeby-Garns Church. Both were built in the 1200s — one is still in use, the other stands as a ruin.

That two medieval churches were built so close to each other, and that only one survived, is unusual enough to be worth a detour.

The place on film

Brottby Café has appeared in several Swedish films, including Vägen ut and several Beck films.

Other productions partially filmed in Brottby are Lilla Jönssonligan och cornflakeskuppen, Kejsarn av Portugallien and Hundraåringen som klev ut genom fönstret och försvann. The church ruins have also had their roles.

Getting here

Near the place is Brottby traffic junction, where E18 meets county road 268. This makes Brottby easy to stop at on the way to or from Norrtälje.
