Dannemora Mineral Museum

The Mineral Museum is located right by Storrymningen at the Dannemora mine. The Mineral Museum can be visited by booking a guided tour via Österbybruk Manor, and during the summer the museum will be open to the public on a number of occasions. The mineral collection contains many rare specimens from Greenland, the Kola Peninsula, Africa and some of the most mineral-rich mines in Sweden. A large part of the fossil collection is from Öland and Gotland, which are among the most fossil-rich areas in the world. In Dannemora, iron ore has been mined since the 1600s and was, right up to the turn of the century in 1900, the largest and foremost iron-ore mine. The ore from the Dannemora mine and the bar iron forged in the Walloon ironworks were then exported, above all to England. This became a cornerstone of the economic development in Sweden during the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s.
