Digermyrens nature reserve

Digermyrens Nature Reserve contains several different forest types in a fairly small-scale mosaic. Rocky pine forest alternates with coniferous mixed forest and swamp forest. Spruce is the dominant tree species, pine and aspen are common, while oak and rowan are present in moderate amounts. The forest has varying structures with trees of different ages and gaps, which creates an undisturbed impression. Many late-growing conifers can be found in the area. Dead wood in various sizes and decay stages is common. The terrain is gently rolling but fairly flat and should therefore be quite easy to walk. Hydrologically, the area is a mosaic of dry, fresh, moist and wet sections. Significant parts consist of fresh lime-influenced soil. The local climate is characterized by high and even air humidity. A number of red-listed species and indicator species live in the area. Historically, the forest had a more sparse character, as it was probably used as pasture forest for long periods. The presence of old dead junipers provides evidence of this. In several places there are previously cultivated meadow or arable lands, which are now more or less overgrown. The land history, variety and long forest continuity create conditions for rich plant and animal life. This applies in particular to the area's fungal flora, which contains many continuity-dependent species, including wood-living fungi and tooth fungi. There are plenty of signs of capercaillie in the reserve, such as droppings and grazed pines, and it is not unlikely that a couple of sections are attractive for capercaillie leks.
