Djursholm Chapel

A beautiful chapel in the heart of the villa community

Djursholms chapel sits idyllically by Danavägen and is one of Roslagen's finest examples of 1890s architecture. Architect Fredrik Lilljekvist designed this beautiful wooden chapel, which was inaugurated on December 18, 1898. The building charmingly combines Neo-Gothic and National Romantic architectural elements on the outside, while the interior bears the elegant touch of Art Nouveau style.

The chapel was born from a genuine need — as the villa community of Djursholm grew, a place of worship closer than the old Danderyd Church was needed. A strong community behind the project made it possible: donations from English Quakers, local patrons such as Henrik Palme and Jean Bolinder, and friends of the community's founder Ernst Beckman made the construction possible. Natanael Beskow, himself a resident of Djursholm, became the chapel's first preacher and left his mark through decorative paintings that can still be seen today.

Today, Djursholms chapel has been a listed building since 1972 and is run by an independent foundation in cooperation with Danderyd Parish. After extensive restorations — most recently in 2023 — visitors can still experience the original colours and the period beauty. The organ from 1898, donated by Maria Ekman, still fills the chapel with its mechanical-pneumatic sound.
