Ekbacken i Åkersberga

Events: Ekbacken is one of the municipality's outdoor meeting places and is located a short walk from Åkersberga centre, near the lock at Åkers Canal. Events held here include National Day, Midsummer celebrations, Canal Day, Senior Citizens' Day and Livat på Ekbacken. Ekbacken has a dance floor and various cultural buildings. Åkers Canal flows past Ekbacken. White House: The White House, originally a white building, is one of the houses at Ekbacken. The house was built in the 1700s and was once a rectory at Österåkers Church. When the house was to be demolished in 1985, Österåkers Heritage Association felt it was worth preserving, and everything usable was salvaged. Half of the tile roof, the part facing Ekbacken, is original; the other half was obtained by the heritage association from the caretaker's cottage at Bergaskolan, which was to be demolished. The White House was inaugurated on 30 August 1987. The heritage association now holds its meetings and gatherings in the house, and the building can also be rented by private individuals for celebrations. Ekbacken is located at Centralvägen 55 in Åkersberga, next to Åkers Canal. To rent Ekbacken, contact Österåkers Heritage and Archaeological Association. Facts: The Boatman's Museum is also located at Ekbacken. The house originally stood on land belonging to Smedby Manor but was purchased by Österåkers Heritage Association in 1957. The association moved the house to Ekbacken, furnished the cottage and used it as a heritage homestead. When the White House came to Ekbacken, the association converted the house into a Boatman's Museum, which was inaugurated on 6 June 1992. Flora: Ekbacken has a rich variety of flora. Examples of spring flowers include bastard balm, spring snowflake, white and blue anemones and cowslip. Later in the summer, Midsummer flowers and other plants bloom, including ragged robin, white stonecrop and cinquefoil. On several of the thick-trunked oak trees there is a rich lichen flora, including pin lichen.
