Ekebysjön Nature Reserve — Nature Close to Urban Areas with Red-Listed Species

Nature Close to the City

Ekebysjöns nature reserve is a municipal nature reserve in Danderyd municipality with a total area of 41.6 hectares, of which 6 hectares consist of Ekebysjön. The reserve was protected in 2008 and is one of the more easily accessible nature areas in Stockholm's northern suburbs.

Habitats and Flora

The landscape varies greatly within the reserve's boundaries: meadow and pasture land, deciduous forest, lake and wetland form a mosaic-like habitat. Among special plants, the red-listed felt-like moss is noteworthy, a bryophyte that thrives in the humid forest environment around the lake.

Fauna — Amphibians and Birds

Ekebysjön is known as an important breeding site for amphibians in the Stockholm region. Four species occur: common frog, moor frog, common toad and newt. Among birds, red-listed species such as great diver, little grebe and pochard have been recorded at the lake. Yet another natural history record: at least 16 dragonfly species have been documented in the reserve.

Trails and Accessibility

The reserve is crossed by several hiking trails and a bridle path. A nature school operates in the area. The reserve is most easily reached on foot from Mörby centrum (approx. 10 minutes), by Roslagsbanan to Bråvallavägen station, or by bus 601 to Modgunnvägen stop.
