Eneby Village

Eneby village has roots dating back to the Viking Age. The village is mentioned in writing for the first time in a court letter dated 28 May 1354 — at that time there were three households here, a few hundred metres west of the present Enebyberg estate.

During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, the village mainly belonged to the Djursholm estate, which was owned by the Banér family.

The Estate and Its Name

In 1769, the brewer Anders Berg acquired Västergården in Eneby village, and in the mid-1770s he had the current main building constructed. It is located in the western part of the community, next to Rinkebyskogen forest.

Tradition says that Anders Berg gave the estate its name by combining Eneby with his own surname. This claim is unconfirmed — according to other theories, the suffix instead refers to a hill that once stood next to the estate but has since been removed. The first time the estate name Enebyberg appears is in a household examination record from 1771.

Through subsequent purchases, all of Eneby village became part of the Enebyberg estate. In 1780 it came into the hands of notary Thure Liebman, who added a second storey to the main building; the wing buildings were added in 1787.

The Villa Community

Enebyberg's modern history begins in 1906, when the estate's then owner, director Ernst Kihlberg, began dividing up the land between Täbyvägen, Gamla Norrtäljevägen and the border with Täby parish. The plan was a villa community in connection with the Roslagsbanan railway — the same model that had already been tried in Djursholm and Stocksund.

The following year, AB Enebybergs villastad was established and land sales began. The company had a sawmill with a planing machine built next to the estate, so that building materials could be sold directly on site. In 1909, the railway got a halt in the eastern part of the community, and the place grew.

The buildings are largely characterized by the first half of the 20th century.
