Finnhamn — vibrant archipelago island in the central archipelago
Finnhamn is a versatile island group in Stockholm's central archipelago, belonging to Österåker Municipality. Three interconnected landmasses — Stora Jolpan, Idholmen and Lilla Jolpan — together form one of the region's most accessible and nature-rich archipelago islands, reached year-round by regular Waxholmsbolaget ferry service.
Geography and Location
Finnhamn is located in the northern Stockholm archipelago, just over a nautical mile southwest of Husarö. The island group consists of three interconnected islands: Stora Jolpan, Idholmen and Lilla Jolpan — the latter connected by a wooden bridge. Address Finnhamns Brygga, 130 25 Ingmarsö. The islands have been managed by the Archipelago Foundation since 1998; Stockholm city purchased the islands in 1943 to preserve them as an outdoor destination.
History
The name Finnhamn derives from Finnish sailing vessels that historically sought shelter in the natural harbour. Around 1915, coal merchant Wilhelm Rönström built a large summer villa, designed by architect Ernst Stenhammar — a building that today houses the island's youth hostel. Idholmen has long contained ecological cultivation and a working farm with Aberdeen Angus cattle and KRAV-certified egg production, with a farm shop open during the visiting season.
Nature and Outdoor Activities
The island group is surrounded by lush deciduous forest, cliffs and shorelines close to the sea. Nature trails run around the islands and are part of the internationally renowned Stockholm Archipelago Trail. Kayak paddling and rowing are popular, and the sheltered location makes the water around the islands calm and well-suited for paddling. Fishing occurs along piers and cliffs.
Activities
Hiking along the islands' nature trails is the natural basis for a visit. Kayak rental, bicycle rental and rowboat rental are available during the summer season. Swimming directly from the cliffs is popular, and camping spots are available for overnight stays in the open air. The island group is suitable for day trips but also offers longer stays.
How to Get There
Waxholmsbolaget operates Finnhamns Brygga with regular traffic year-round from Stockholm and Vaxholm. There are no road connections to the mainland — the boat is the only option. During the summer season, traffic is increased and departures are more frequent.
