From city pulse to archipelago peace – the perfect brunch trip begins in Stockholm
Just an hour and a half from Stockholm city centre, a completely different pace awaits – salt air, calm sea bays and an archipelago that seems to have forgotten there's a big city nearby.
The journey there is part of the experience
From Stockholm, you can easily reach Roslagen by bus or train. The shuttle bus to Norrtälje departs from Tekniska Högskolan and travels along E18 – in just over an hour, you exchange Stockholm's skyline for Norrtälje's red wooden facades and harbor entrance. If you prefer water the whole way, you can take the steamship S/S Blidösund (Blidösundsbolaget) in summer, which departs on Friday afternoons from Skeppsbron by the castle and glides through the winding fairways of Blidösund to Norrtälje harbor in the evening – a journey in itself.
Arrival in another world
It's hard to pinpoint exactly what happens when the city disappears over the horizon. The air feels different. The pace slows down. In Norrtälje, you'll find a lively little center with cafés and restaurants along the waterfront promenade, and just outside the city, the archipelago landscape opens up – with islands, skerries and long rocky beaches to explore.
Archipelago breakfast and local food
A brunch trip to Roslagen is not complete without stopping at one of the region's local cafés or restaurants. Many serve ingredients from the local area – fish from the Baltic Sea, berries and vegetables from Roslagen soil. Settle down by a jetty, listen to the gulls' cries and let the food take its time.
What awaits for the rest of the day?
From Norrtälje, you can continue out into the archipelago by boat, cycle along the coast towards Kapellskär or simply walk along the waterfront promenade. Whatever you choose, the stark contrast to city life leaves its mark – and most people who go there for a weekend start planning their next visit already on the bus ride home.
