Fredlarna

This is a unique world, a gem well worth visiting. You travel here on nature's own terms, preferably by your own boat. Seen from the air, it is a tangle of grey rocks, glassy water mirrors, red cottages, the occasional boat and green pastures. You can moor at the far end of the northern, fairly shallow, bay, where sailing boats too can tie up by some rocks. On Ut-Fredlarna there is a good harbour in the sound between Stora and Lilla Vånskär. Stora Vånskär has a village with about 20 well-kept sheds around the shallow harbour to the west. In-Fredlarna lacks a deep, sheltered harbour. Those interested in flowers should visit Vånskär's beautiful and unusually flower-rich meadows. The islands have interesting vegetation thanks to the calcareous soil. These are islands and skerries trodden by both residents and visitors, generation after generation. Fishermen, hunters, smugglers, the shipwrecked, sailors, customs officers, authors, artists, researchers and photographers have navigated the narrow waters surrounding the islands. Several of the islands have been described by well-known artists and authors. After the Second World War, the islands were divided into very small shares that gave the right to fishing and hunting. The islands are owned by a varying number of private individuals, but also in part by the Archipelago Foundation. The right of public access gives visitors access, but when walking on the islands consideration is required, since all the sheds are privately owned. Among the island groups in the outer archipelago are also Röder, Skarv, Kalvskär and Gillöga.
