Frösunda Church

Frösunda Church is located in Frösunda parish, approximately 14 kilometers northeast of Vallentuna center, and belongs to Vallentuna congregation. The site has a long ecclesiastical history – a parish priest is already mentioned here at the end of the 13th century, and an archbishop visited the church during the 14th century.

A Medieval Stone Church

The present church was erected in the 15th century in split gray stone and replaced an older building that was probably made of wood. The church interior is characterized by four brick vaults – three stellar vaults in the east and one four-part ribbed vault in the west – which are contemporary with the church. The gables' round blind niches in brick and the porch with corner chains of sandstone give the building its characteristic appearance.

Inside, the church contains several valuable furnishings. The baptismal font of light brown sandstone dates from the latter part of the 11th century and was probably made in northern Uppland. On the altar, which was built in the 1950s, stands an altarpiece from the 15th century with probable North German origins. The rococo pulpit from the 18th century is a work by master Magnus Granlund, and in the choir hangs a brass chandelier from the late medieval period. The church's organ with 18 stops was created in the latter part of the 20th century, while the organ facade is from the early 19th century.

East of the church stands a red-painted wooden boarded bell tower with four bells, and just west of the porch stands a rune stone from the 10th century. The church is surrounded by a dry stone wall, and along the eastern side of the churchyard runs one of the Roslagsbanan railway lines.
