Frötuna

The Name Comes from Fröja

The name was written Frøtunum in 1311 and contains the god name Fröja together with tuna, "enclosure". It originally referred to a village where the vicarage now stands.

Tuna names in conjunction with a god name belong to the oldest layers of place names in Uppland, and point to a place of significance long before Christianization.

The Parish from Which Others Broke Away

Frötuna parish has medieval origins and was once considerably larger than today. At the end of the 1500s, Rådmansö broke away as its own parish and municipality, and in 1622 Norrtälje city broke away when Gustav II Adolf founded the city.

It says something about Frötuna being the region's original center, before the city became one.

The Church

Frötuna Church lies by Kyrksjön, approximately three kilometers south of Norrtälje. The church's central part is oldest and was built during the 1100s. Next to it lies the vicarage, and later a poorhouse, schoolhouse and parish office were added.

The Landscape

The parish lies southeast of Norrtälje, on the western part of the Rådmansö peninsula and south of Lommaren and Norrtäljeviken. It is a lake-rich and hilly forest district with cultivated land in the north. Within the parish lies the lake Limmaren, the manor Björnö and the village Spillersboda.

From the Bronze Age there are scattered burial mounds, from the Iron Age about forty graveyards and a fort. Three runestones have been found.

Frötuna lies immediately southwest of Norrtälje, just south of E18 and east of Kyrksjön.
