The tower to the west of Gottröra Church is from the 1100s and was originally a defensive tower that could only be reached by a ladder, which was then hauled up when the enemy approached.
Large parts of the church were destroyed in a fire in 1893, and some of the furnishings that were not destroyed by the fire were sold at auction to fund the rebuilding of the church. What was saved from both fire and auction included the triumphal crucifix, an Uppland work from the 1300s, as well as a valuable painting that was formerly an altarpiece and made by the court painter Georg Engelhart Schröder. The church silver is made from the jewellery Ulrika Eleonora wore at her coronation.
