Gräddö-Askens nature reserve

Most of the area has been classified as a key biotope in the Swedish Forest Agency's inventory. The area has been used as natural pasture land in the past and is assessed to have a long continuity as deciduous forest-covered land. The deciduous forest dominated landscape that exists in the area today has arisen since grazing ceased. The broadleaf forest is diverse with aspen, birch and alder dominating, with elements of oak, ash and occasional willow. Older spruce and scattered pine also occur in the area. In the southern part there is older hazel. The forest is characterised by the absence of forestry measures in recent times and thereby has a notable presence of structures that are unusual in rationally managed forests. This means, among other things, that the area has good conditions to host demanding species. High forest biological conservation values are found with elements of key features such as high stumps, fallen trees in various stages of decomposition and elements of old trees (tree continuity). Currently there are no year-round residents on the island and the area is mainly used by the island's summer residents. There are no signs of wear and tear.
