Grilling in nature along the Roslagen coast and inland

Gathering around an open fire is one of the best things Roslagen has to offer. The region stretches along the Uppland coast with archipelago, lakes and forest — and under the right of public access, the opportunities to grill and spend the night in nature are generous, as long as the fire is handled with care and the rules set by the municipalities and rescue services are followed.

Municipal fire sites and nature reserves

Norrtälje, Österåker and Östhammar municipalities maintain a number of prepared grilling sites with wind shelters, wood storage and dry toilets. Typical sites are located near outdoor recreation areas, hiking trails and bathing spots. Sites in nature reserves are marked in the Naturkartan app (naturkartan.se), where you can also filter by grilling sites and wind shelters along Roslagsleden and other marked trails.

Right of public access and fire regulations

According to the right of public access, you may light a small fire on land where it does not risk spreading — but you are always responsible for ensuring the fire is safely extinguished. Norrtälje municipality and the Stockholm Greater Fire Department can issue fire bans when the fire risk is high, especially during April–September. Before lighting the fire: check if a fire ban is in effect via the Stockholm Greater Fire Department or call Norrtälje municipality's automated answering service at 0176-28 42 00.

Archipelago grilling

In the archipelago, the right of public access means you can grill on rocks and skerries, but remember that the landowner's rights apply on plot land and that certain islands are protected during the nesting season. Use existing stones as wind shelter and always remove the ash. If you bring disposable grills, do not place them directly on rocks — the heat can crack the stone.

Season and tips

The municipal grilling sites are accessible year-round. In winter, a good branch, a basket of dry wood and a thermos of hot chocolate are the perfect companions. In summer and autumn, evening fires by the water are a popular activity for both families with children and hiking groups along Roslagsleden.
