Herräng

An old ironworks village at the edge of the archipelago

Herräng lies by Singöfjärden, about 52 kilometres north of Norrtälje and close to the border with Häverö's archipelago. The village has origins in the mining that began in the 1500s and continued right into the 1960s. The ironworks, which was active 1902–1969, left behind a rich industrial history and characteristic works environments that shape the community's appearance to this day.

In summer Herräng is known far beyond Sweden as the home of the Herräng Dance Camp – the world's largest and most venerable lindy hop and swing camp. Since its start in the 1980s the camp has gathered dancers from all over the world in the little village, and it was right here that the almost forgotten lindy hop dance was revived and spread globally. During the camp weeks Folkets Hus and the surrounding areas become a pulsating international meeting place.

Things to do in Herräng

Outside the summer dance weeks, Herräng offers a calm archipelago setting and the opportunity for nature experiences. The culture path, which starts behind Folkets Hus and follows red markings, leads the visitor through a landscape shaped by mining and works history. One of the highlights along the path is the slag heap – a unique industrial heritage landscape with sweeping views over bays and skerries.

In Hensvik you'll find well-preserved old boathouses and a barbecue spot with a clear view over Galtfjärden. Uddhamn's bathing spot offers a sandy beach, bathing jetties and barbecue facilities, and just outside lies the rocky island of Brännskäret. The surrounding water landscape is suited for paddling and boating.

How to get here

Herräng is reached by car via road 76 from Stockholm and Norrtälje, with an exit towards Herräng and Hallstavik. Buses serve the Norrtälje–Hallstavik route regularly, and from there local connections are available. From Stockholm the driving distance is about 100 kilometres.
