In Herräng in northern Roslagen, Stockholm County's most extensive mining operations were carried out. Iron production has roots dating back to the 1500s and around the mines a complete industrial community developed – mine shafts, workers' dwellings and industrial traces remain to this day.
The County's Largest Mining Operation
Iron processing in Herräng dates back to the 1500s, and eventually the most extensive mining operation in all of Stockholm County took place here. A entire works community grew up around the mines, with workers' housing, and the operation shaped the region for centuries. Production ended abruptly in the 1960s.
Traces of the Works Today
The traces of the iron ore industry are still clearly visible in Herräng – mining pits and rows of preserved workers' cottages show what a typical works and industrial community from the 1700s and 1800s looked like. The water-filled mine pits and the well-preserved buildings make Herräng one of Roslagen's most remarkable industrial environments.
