Idö

Large parts of Idö and Arholma are nature reserves owned and managed by the Archipelago Foundation. The landscape is kept open with old methods, biodiversity and the grazing animals. In spring on Idö, the visitor is met by the barren outer archipelago's short-lived floral splendour with whole seas of wood anemones, fields of fragrant ramsons, floors of cowslips. There are also large stands of protected orchids, a rich animal life and plenty of waterfowl resting in well-sheltered bays. Sea eagles and ospreys are often seen soaring past. On the shallows lie tufted ducks and goosanders; further inland you can see goldcrest and black woodpecker. On the island there are also roe deer, fox and badger. Idö and Idskär - with their elements of yews and lesser stinkhorn - are popular with experienced canoeists before they continue across Havssvalget towards the Sea of Åland. On Idö there is no permanent population. There is regular boat traffic to and from Idö during parts of spring and in summer. Raise the semaphore at the jetty if you want to travel with the boat.
