The J.A.G. Acke Museum

Villa Akleja at Pilgatan 5 in Vaxholm is a culturally and historically valuable home that once belonged to the artist couple Johan Axel Gustaf and Eva Acke. The couple lived here from 1901 until J.A.G. Acke's death in 1924, and the villa gained its present form through a renovation and extension designed by architect Ernst Stenhammar in close collaboration with Acke himself. The building was declared a historic monument in 1981.

Architecture with innovative thinking

The villa is remarkable from an architectural history perspective thanks to its open floor plan – probably the first of its kind in a Swedish villa. At the center of the house stands a man-height open fireplace, and from the salon you can access the two-story studio with large north-facing windows. Acke left his playful mark on many details: the stair stringers are shaped like waves, the gallery railing was inspired by a fence, and a small engraving with the couple's names and a heart adorns the corner post by the fireplace.

During 2015–2023, the villa housed the J.A.G. Acke Museum, which was owned and operated by art expert Claes Moser and his wife Susanna Evers. A visit provides a unique insight into a vanished artist environment by the waters of Vaxholm.
