Ironworks in Harg
The well-preserved harbour warehouse from 1758 at Hargshamn is a quiet monument to the time when Roslagen's Walloon ironworks exported their iron to Europe.
About Järnboden
Järnboden in Harg was built in 1758 and served as a harbor warehouse for iron from the surrounding Walloon ironworks. From here, bar iron was loaded onto barges and transported to Stockholm and further out to European markets — one of the most important links in the logistics chain of Uppland iron trade during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The building is one of the few preserved warehouse buildings from this era in Roslagen and testifies to the intense maritime and commercial life that once characterized the harbor bays along the coast.
What to see and experience
Järnboden is located by a sheltered sea bay and is in itself a valuable cultural heritage object well worth a visit. During the summer months, art exhibitions are arranged in the warehouse, which gives the building a vibrant cultural content alongside its historical value. The hiking trails Vikingaleden and Roslagsleden pass nearby Järnboden — a natural stop for those hiking along the coast.
The place also offers a quiet and naturally beautiful environment by the water — a calm and easily accessible stop along the coastline in Östhammar municipality.
How to get here
Järnboden is located at Hargs socken 589, 742 95 Hargshamn. Hargshamn is reached by car via road 76 and the exit towards Harg, approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Tierp. Along the coast, the place is a natural stop on the way to Öregrund or Östhammar.
