Kårsta Church

Kårsta Church is located in the old church village of Kårstaby in Vallentuna Municipality, approximately 2.5 km west of the town of Kårsta. The church belongs to the Össeby Parish within the Diocese of Stockholm.

A church with medieval roots

A church at this location is mentioned as early as the beginning of the 14th century, and the present stone church was built in the late 15th century. It is constructed of grey stone with a nave, straight choir, sacristy and porch – all covered with slate-clad saddle roofs. In the western gable is a runestone set into the wall that tells of three men who raised the stone in memory of a person named Helge. The exterior has remained essentially unchanged since around 1500.

Among the preserved furnishings are an altarpiece from the late 15th century with carved and gilded wooden figures, a Renaissance-style pulpit from the 17th century, and a gallery organ built in 1938 with eighteen stops. Approximately 150 metres west of the church, on a hill, stands a red-painted bell tower. Of its two bells, the older one was made as early as 1511.
