Kullö nature reserve

Kullö Nature Reserve is located in Vaxholm Municipality and encompasses the western part of Kullö with two heights and open land between them. The reserve is approximately 28 hectares in size and has been under nature protection since 2004. Here there is a rich variety of environments – from bedrock heath, pastures and meadows to bird-rich wetlands – and the area is home to several species, two of which are on the red list.

A reserve with engaged residents

The reserve was created following a process in which local enthusiasts on Kullö managed to stop plans to sell the land to a private buyer. As a condition for establishing the reserve, it was required that a reserve association take responsibility for management. Kullö Reserve Association today brings together around 210 Vaxholm households, and members help each other maintain the area and meet regularly.

The association works to restore the reserve to a mixture of traditional archipelago farming and old-growth-like forest. The work is carried out in accordance with an established management plan and is partly financed by grants from the County Administrative Board and the City of Vaxholm.
