Kulturstigen Österbybruk — a walk in the footsteps of Walloon ironworking

Kulturstigen is a 6 km long loop trail running directly next to Österbybruk — one of Roslagen's best-preserved ironworks communities. The trail runs along dam embankments: ridges of earth, stone and slag that were built during the 1500s and 1600s to hold back water in the dams that powered the hammers and bellows of iron production. It is literally historical ground beneath your feet.

Along the way you pass cultural remains from five centuries of iron production. Ore from the Dannemora mine was processed here into the highly sought-after rod iron — a Walloon craft that was brought to Sweden by French and Walloon smiths during the 1600s and which laid the foundation for the entire Swedish iron industry. Signs along the trail explain the function and history of each location.

Suitable starting points can be found at Simbadets Camping, the local heritage farm or the bathing house — all with parking. The trail is marked in Naturkartan. The difficulty level is moderate; the dam embankments are narrow but well-maintained. Consider combining it with a visit to Österbybruk manor house or Dannemora mine museum just to the west.
