The Lake That Was Once a Sea

Länna Church Lake was cut off from the sea around the beginning of our era. It was the land uplift that caused this, and it also explains why the church is situated as it is: the original way to reach the church service was by water.

The church was built during the 1300s and is located north of Kyrksjön, south of Norrtälje.

Traces of Early Settlement

The area bears older traces of habitation. Northwest of Lännbyberg there is a Bronze Age cairn, but it has probably been a matter of temporary settlement.

From the Vendel period, around 650 AD, there are cultivation traces in the form of a late stone-built terrace and fossil fields. On the vicar's farm properties, next to the cottage Sveden, there are cultivation remains dated to around the year 1075.

Already during the Viking Age, Lännaby appears to have developed into a village.

The Village in the Records

Länna village is first mentioned in 1355, as in Westerlenda — then Thomas and his wife Botild donated a farm in the village to the Convent of Poor Clares, on the condition that they could remain there for the rest of their lives.

Between 1544 and 1573 the village comprised one unit of tax and two units of noble land, and in 1639 there were three agricultural units here. The vicar's farm, which is situated separately from the other farms, is probably the old Österlänna.

How to Get There

Länna is located south of Norrtälje. Bergshamra, which belongs to the same parish, is approximately 15 kilometers south of the town.
