Ljusterö Church

Norra Ljusterö got its first chapel during the 1600s, possibly as early as the 1500s. The chapel was built within the village of Mellansjö next to Mittensjön. The village of Mellansjö lay gathered on a hill until the land reform of 1865, when more farms were moved out of the village. A new chapel replaced the older one during the 1750s. It was placed about 250 metres northeast of the old one by Mittensjön, which thereafter came to be called Kyrksjön. The chapel was built of horizontal timber with overlying red-painted panelling and a board roof. Towards the end of the 1800s a decision was made for rebuilding, and the chapel was completely transformed into today's church. You can reach Ljusterö church by public transport from Stockholm Central on the metro's red line to Danderyds sjukhus. There you change to bus 626 towards Ljusterö. Get off at Ljusterö skola.
