Markim Church

A Romanesque stone church with medieval roots

Markims kyrka lies on a hill in a beautiful cultivated landscape and belongs to Vallentuna parish. The church is first mentioned in a document from 1287, but was built around 1200 in Romanesque style. The site has deep historical roots — there was a sacrifice spring from pagan times here, and later sacrifices were made to Saint Lars, who was believed to be the church's patron saint.

The stone church consists of a nave with a narrower choir in the east, a vestibule and a sacristy. The walls are rendered with rounded arch window openings, and the nave's roof was replaced as early as the 1400s with barrel vaults. The church is remarkably unchanged and preserves much of its medieval origin, although the windows have been altered over the centuries.

The interior bears traces of different stylistic periods. The most important medieval furnishing is the triumphal crucifix from the latter part of the 1200s, carved from oak. During the 1700s, a beautiful rococo-style altar pulpit was added, and from the 1820s there is a gallery balustrade and organ facade in Empire style. The church was restored in 1950 and also contains three beautiful brass chandeliers from the 1600s and 1700s.
