Mjölkö

It is said that the name Mjölkö came from the fact that milk (mjölk) from the islands was collected here on the island to then be transported onwards. In addition to day labour and work on the croft, the crofter also had fishing as a sideline. Exactly where the croft stood is uncertain; there are two buildings of older date on the site. One is a low timbered house with a kitchen and a chamber. At one end of the house there used to be a pigsty, it is said. That was not at all unusual. In the past people lived wall to wall with the livestock to save heat. This house is today a summer residence. The other cottage has been rebuilt and extended. The buildings here at the croft have a wonderfully beautiful location, set on a height and surrounded by undulating flower meadows. A cowshed, outbuilding and root cellar belong to what was once a croft and later a farm. Among the plants surrounding the croft are lilacs, fruit trees, a multitude of different flowers - old-fashioned and newer varieties - and a giant oak, perhaps a guardian tree, with many hundreds of years behind it. The last crofter was Per Persson. Waxholmsbolaget serves Mjölkö all year round, but the boats do not run as often throughout the year. Raise the semaphore on the jetty if you want to come aboard!
