Norröra

Norröra is a lush island in Norrtälje municipality with a history stretching far back in time. In the 14th century, the island belonged to the Penningby estate, and the earliest inhabitants are believed to have had roots in the Baltic region. The original village was located by the silted-up Norrviken but was burned down by the Russians in 1719 and was subsequently rebuilt at its present location.

The Island of Saltkråkan

Norröra gained great attention in the 1960s when the island was chosen by a film crew – who searched by helicopter in the archipelago – to become the location representing Saltkråkan in Astrid Lindgren's films. Interest in these filming locations remains, and guided tours have offered visitors the opportunity to see with their own eyes the places featured in the stories.

In the village there are several older buildings to see, including cottages that were moved here from Svartlöga, a boatman's cottage from the 1800s, and a mission house from the early 1900s. Today only a few families remain on the island year-round, but thanks to daily boat connections, Norröra is easy to reach for those who want to experience an authentic piece of the Roslagen archipelago.
