Nysättra

On the mainland side of the strait

Nysättra is located on the coast northeast of Norrtälje, approximately thirteen kilometers from the town. The area belongs to Vätö parish but is situated on the mainland — it is Vätösundet (Vätö Strait) that separates it from the island of Vätö.

The bathing area is located in the strait. Most services can be found in Harg, on the other side.

A parish from mainland to open sea

Vätö parish was formed around 1330 through a separation from Bro parish, and it is unusually extensive: it encompasses the island of Vätö, part of the mainland northwest of it, and numerous islands in the archipelago beyond.

Among the islands are Edsgarn, Käringö, Gyltan, Skabbö, Lidön and Tyvön, as well as the northern part of Gisslingö. Further out towards the sea lie Håkanskär, Käringboskär and Vattungarna, and the parish's southern boundary ends at the Tjärven lighthouse in the Åland Sea.

The landscape is rocky and forested. The parish is also home to Lidö manor and the parish church Vätö Church.

The name Vätö

The parish name was written in 1337 as Vætu and derives from the island name. It contains vät — "pool, marsh" or "shallow water that has dried up" — and may have referred to shallow bays.

Ancient monuments

From the Bronze Age there are scattered burial cairns in the parish, and from the Iron Age six burial grounds.

The area today

Nysättra and Vätö district today live mainly on tourism and holiday homes. Proximity to both Stockholm and Uppsala means that many have their summer cottage here.
