Step into 17th century Öregrund

With the app Visir Uplandia, developed by Disir Productions in collaboration with archaeologists and Öregrund residents, you can experience the town as it looked in 1626. The technology is augmented reality (AR) – you point your phone or tablet at the real environment and see multi-masted ships in the harbor instead of leisure boats, harbor warehouses instead of restaurants, and historical figures moving through the same streets you are standing on.

How the experience works

Open the app when you are in Öregrund harbor and point the camera at your surroundings. You can then walk around the reconstructed 17th century town, enter buildings and meet historical figures – all in real time linked to the place you are physically located. If you don't want to walk around, you can also navigate using touch screen controls.

There is also an offsite mode that lets you explore Öregrund 1626 from home – download the app, select the Öregrund environment and navigate with touch controls without needing to be on location.

The experience is a unique way to understand why Öregrund is counted as one of Sweden's best-preserved wooden towns – and why the 17th century maritime era left such deep marks on the townscape.
