A Town Preserved in Time

Öregrund is one of the best-preserved wooden towns along the Swedish east coast. The street layout and buildings reflect the 17th-century trading town, when Öregrund was an important port for exports of iron and copper from the Uppland ironworks. It was a town where merchants, seafarers and craftspeople lived side by side in wooden houses along narrow alleys down to the quay.

With the app Visir Uplandia, you can hold up your phone to the town's streets and see how Öregrund looked in 1626 — an augmented reality window right into the 17th-century urban space. The app is free and works on location in Öregrund with GPS-guided views, but also in offline mode for those who want to prepare at home. The app was developed on behalf of Region Uppsala in collaboration with Visit Roslagen.
