Öregrund Church

Öregrund church was built in the 1490s when the town was founded. Among the church's oldest furnishings is an altar cabinet from the 1400s. In the western part of the nave hang two votive ships from the 1700s. The church was ravaged by fire in 1652 and 1719 in connection with the "Russian raids". After the latter fire the church was left without a roof, without a sacristy and with a demolished porch. A large part of the furnishings had moreover been lost. From 1723 onwards, continuous repair and new construction followed over several decades. In 1763-64 large parts of the church's furnishings were renewed. The repairs and restorations that have since taken place have not significantly changed the church's architecture. The red-painted, shingle-clad bell tower, which is a full 18 metres high to the eaves, lies on a height southwest of the church.
