Örsö — archipelago idyll with magnificent views
Örsö is a tranquil and unspoiled island southeast of Ljusterö in Österåker's archipelago. With its highest point at 42 metres, the island offers magnificent views over the middle archipelago, forest trails and swimming-friendly rocks — without restaurants or services. You bring your own packed lunch and find your own spot on the rocks.
Geography and Location
Örsö is located southeast of southern Ljusterö in Roslagen's central archipelago, in Österåker municipality. Jetty coordinates: 59,43181N, 18,58588E. Waxholmsbolaget operates the island with regular scheduled service year-round. The island has no road connections to the mainland and is accessible only by boat.
Nature and Topography
Örsö's highest point is 42 meters above sea level — remarkably high for an archipelago island in the central archipelago. From there, views open up stretching far out towards the open sea and inward towards the undulating inner archipelago landscape. Forest paths wind through mixed deciduous forest, and the rocky coastline offers sunny bathing spots in a sea of skerries and water.
History
Örsö is one of the older inhabited islands in the area — settled since the 1600s. Around 2005, approximately 24 people lived permanently on the island. Agriculture was discontinued in the 1950s and a shop that opened in the 1930s closed down. A leisure boat yard is today the only active business remaining on the island. Traces of the island's historical life — crofting, fishing and farming — live on in the open landscape and settlement structure.
Activities
Hiking along the island's forest paths up to the viewpoint is the natural hub of a visit. Swimming from the rocks along the coastline provides the classic archipelago bathing experience in clear water. Fishing, nature studies and peaceful walks in a quiet island landscape without commercial services are what Örsö offers. Scout camps have historically been held on the island.
Practical Information
Örsö has no restaurants, cafés or accommodation. Visitors should bring packed food, water and everything necessary for their stay. Waxholmsbolaget operates the jetty year-round, with increased frequency during the summer season.
