Oskar-Fredriksborg Fortress

A strategic fortress at Stockholm's entrance

Oskar-Fredriksborg is a well-preserved fortification on eastern Rindö, located at Stockholm's entrance. The fort was constructed between 1870 and 1877 after the need to strengthen the defence at Oxdjupet became apparent, where larger merchant vessels now required passage. The facility was inaugurated by King Oscar II and has been classified as a listed building since 2002.

The fortress was built with impressive engineering – an upper and lower work were blasted into the rock and connected by a 300-metre-long protective tunnel. The main armament consisted of three large cannons, while the lower work was protected by covered casemates. To facilitate night-time fire, a searchlight was also blasted into the rock chamber at the entrance to Byviken, which could be rolled out on rails when needed to illuminate enemy vessels.

Following the defence decision of 1925, which involved disarmament of the defence, Oskar-Fredriksborg lost its military function along with other fortifications in the area. Today, the well-preserved facilities bear witness to an important period in Sweden's defence history.
